Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a white, crystalline, water-soluble substance found in citrus fruits and green vegetables. Everyone needs Vitamin C daily, not only for the benefits it provides to the body but for the simple fact that the body does not manufacture Vitamin C.  Like the other vitamins, the body needs Vitamin C to keep it in good working condition. Numerous benefits can be attributed to Vitamin C, including strengthening of bones and connective tissue, aiding in the healing of wounds, increasing the performance of the immune system and its’ anti-oxidant properties.

Our bodies cannot make Vitamin C and our capacity to store Vitamin C is limited. We must, therefore, take in some Vitamin C each day. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin and as such is not stored in the body and must be replaced each day. Vitamin C is absorbed in our intestine, passes directly into the blood, and is carried to the tissues where it will be utilized. Water-soluble vitamins are usually excreted in the urine on a daily basis. Tissue storage capacity of water soluble vitamins is limited and, as the tissues become saturated, the rate of excretion increases sharply. This keeps us from overdosing but this is also why we need to take these vitamins daily.

Since the body processes Vitamin C quickly, many experts recommend taking Vitamin C in doses of 500 mg twice per day. For intense training or high levels of stress, some experts recommend all athletes training hard intake about 3 grams per day.
